Aegean islands traded for Italian colonies

Is it possible for the Greeks or the Italian to successfully offer to trade Greeks non-mainland (Aegean islands) in part or in full for Italian colony's (Eritrea for example) at any point after 1900?

Greece doesn't have the resources for a colony and those Islands are regarded as part of Greek homeland and too strategical important to be traded away.

the logical swap would be the Dodecanese (off the Turkish coast) held by Italy for the Ionian Islands (Corfu and Co.) off the western coast of Greece? but Greece was due, by agreement, to get the Dodecanese back anyway so why would they want to trade anything away?

You run into the issue that both areas are viewed as Greek. A more logical trade would be if Greece occupies a part of Albania outside of North Epirus, They could trade that for the Dodecanese Islands.

If Portugal had the ressources for colonies totally a larger population than the mainland you can be sure Greece has the ressources for at least Eritrea

Portugal has a higher population, gdp, and no military threats to it's homeland. Greece has to worry about fighting the Ottomans,Bulgarians, Albanians, and Italians and internal divisions along with a focus on expansion in the Balkans .

Considering eritrea’s Size, a few thousand people would be well enough to administer and control it, that is well within greece’s Capability.

A figure in the lower five digits might be more manageable for unforeseen events.

Edit: Given Eritrea's location on the Red Sea, Italy would probably demand too a high price from the Greeks.

Still doesn't solve the other issues, Those people are better served in administering the still impoverished Greece and future conquests in the balkans or used to fight the ottomans. Given the horrible state of Greek finances, a cash-sink like Eritrea is not a good idea and why does Greece even need a colony in the first place.

The one will not be seen as sufficient compensation for the other.

Maybe Fascist Italy could offer Albania to Greece, but that seems equally unrealistic.

What would be the motivation for such a move? Desire to resurrect past glories of Sparta ? Or athenian fleet ?
I'm not being sarcastic, if ultra nationalistic tendencies arise in greece then weirder things are possible
You can start your timeline with a fascist type coup in greece ,a foreign policy based on expansionism seeking to compete with great powers leads to a desire to get overseas colonies. And a aggressive stance towards their Balkan neighbors and Turkey

Afterall who could have predicted nasser's UAR ?
One country of Indonesia
Or 2 Pakistans divided by thousand miles of india

Overseas colony mean also s sizable naval investment
Esp if the main threat to Eritrea is a relatively powerful african neighbor like Ethiopia

In which case, said Fascist state would put an emphasis on historic territory above overseas colonies. It would want the closer territory of Megali Hellas over some wild goose chase in Africa.
