Advice for making states

Can anyone help me split Louisiana up? Everything I try is either convergent or just too weird.

Are you talking about splitting the whole territory into multiple states, or the state itself.

I know you have a map of the territory, but it's worth asking. Rivers help in division, along with mountains and population centers.

Maybe have the eventual state of 'Louisiana' include only the southern (more francophone) portions of its OTL counterpart, and combine the northern area with at least part of OTL Arkansas? And perhaps have the River Arkansas, rather than a line of latitude, as the boundary between your equivalents of Kansas and Oklahoma? I'm doing both of those in my own TL, "Wider Still, And Wider", in which 'America' was a dominion within the British Empire at the time of that expansion...
Also, how about merging the LP portion of OTL Minnesota into TTL's equivalent of 'Iowa'?

Make Wisconsin wider in the north, with the border along the Minnesota River. Iowa now extends from there in the north. On the west it's border would be the Big Sioux River then south east along the Missouri to St Louis. Southern Missouri gets absorbed into Arkansas. Louisiana stays the same just a litte wider in the north, butting its border to Mexican Texas. Are you going to have Oklahoma remain and Indian dumping ground? Anyway extent it south the Texas. Merge the Dakotas. Keep Kansas and Nebraska the same.
Then divide Wyoming between Montana and Colorado
