Admiral Nimitz's career cut short due to hand injury

Hi!

According to Wikipedia, Admiral Chester Nimitz nearly lost his career due to an injury to his hand:

"Nimitz lost part of one finger in an accident with a diesel engine, only saving the rest of it—and his career—when the machine jammed against his Annapolis ring.[5]. He also suffered a severe ear infection, becoming partially deaf. He compensated by becoming proficient at reading lips[citation needed]. Nimitz barked orders even through the unbearable pain."

Suppose the injury is worse than IOTL and Nimitz is forced to leave the service between the wars. How does World War II unfold in the Pacific? Does MacArthur take over, and how would that change things?

Thakns in advance,

Even though this wasn't part of your question...

Assuming with another Admiral, we still win the Pacific War...
I would like to volunteer a butterfly chain of events...

CVN 68 is no longer named USS Nimitz, but instead USS George Washington... (Always wondered why Eisenhower, Roosevelt and Lincoln got aircraft carriers named in OTL before Washington did.)

Butterfly...

CVN 73 is no longer named USS George Washington but instead USS John Paul Jones... (The Forrest Sherman destroyer DDG-32 with the same name was decommissioned 12 days before CVN 73 was ordered... perfect passing of the name)

Butterfly...

The new Arleigh class destroyer DDG-53 is no longer named USS John Paul Jones, but instead named USS William Henry Seward.

End of Butterfly effect on this issue.
