ACH: ALT American Civil Wars

All on the tin, really. What are some instances where the United States could have faced nationally traumatic civil insurrection?

Here're some starters:

  • New England secedes
  • Nullification Crisis gets outta hand
  • Zachary Taylor lives, stands up to Slavocrats
etc., etc.

That Pennsylvanian Rebellion in the 1780s suceeded, i think it was Shays. or if the south and North fought in the 1810s over slavery, the north is por-britain, the south is pro-france.

A relatively nasty possibility is if the CSA had found a way to stir up large-scale fifth columns in 1864 during the US Civil War instead of a bunch of fairly ineffectual terrorist attacks. That would have been quite horrific.

I find this sort of scenario interesting as well. People tend to forget how ugly the Civil War got in the Midwest and underestimate Copperhead sympathies; Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio especially.

I've always wondered: in a "New England Secedes" scenario, would the Midwest follow the Easterners or remain in the Union?

The big problem was that the Copperheads were PEACE Democrats and the CSA wanted them to do WAR things. It wasn't for lack of imagination or concept that CS attempts at terrorism failed.
