A Wolfe Tone WI: What if he had succesfully enlisted in the East India Company?

This thread is pretty much as it states in the title. In 1786, Wolf Tone attempted to enlist as a soldier in the East India Company. He applied too late in the year though when no ships were heading east, resulting in his application being rejected.

What if he was successful in his application? How would this affect the history of Ireland and in particular the Rising of 1798? Would it take place?

I think there would still be a Society of United Ireland, and it still would plot to rebel. However, with a less competent leader, it will be weaker. This may mean that Hoche does not attempt to invade Ireland, which means that the rebellion would happen a year earlier without the promise of French support.
