A whole new ballgame: Commissioner Bush - Brainstorming TL

I rather like before 1900 PoDs, and Raptor of Spain will continue on regardless BUT I'm starting to brainstorm on a new TL:

It started because I came across a short clip of George Bush in the baseball booth and he... sounded like he knew what he was talking about, and certainly passionate. It's fairly well known that he at least considered making a run for baseball commissioner. I love baseball and while I don't love George Bush I don't hate him either. I'm also just doing some preliminary research so far. The tentative PoD is Karl Rove gets the Flu in 1993, (or maybe dies in a car accident or something) well regardless, without his influence Bush is convinced to stay with the Rangers and rises to become commissioner of baseball as a result of actions in the lockout of 1994. And perhaps continuing up to the result of the 2000 election, probably a McCain win as I see it from this early date.

In some ways more complex, but also less than a long one.

Any ideas?

Well sorry, I can't help (I know absolutely nothing that would help you). However, as a consolation, I will defintely read this in TL form. It sounds funny, not gonna lie:p

Well, IIRC Bush was the frontrunner for commissioner in 1992. Bud Selig was only the interim commissioner. His main responsibilities were to (a) keep the seat warm and (b) find a real permanent commissioner. For this second part he was in charge of drafting a list of potential candidates for the owner's to vote on. But since Selig wanted the job for himself, he procrastinated for 6 years (yeah you read that right. He procrastinated for 6 years.). In 1998, the owners got tired of it and just confirmed him as the permanent commissioner. So for your POD you don't even have to kill Rove (although many left-wingers would appreciate it if you did). Just have someone else made interim commissioner in 1992. He presents a list to the owners in a timely manner, and Bush gets made permanent commissioner later that year or maybe early in 1993. That effectively butterflies his political career, since he has other things to worry about.

Thank you for respoding!

Well I just think that if Turdblossom[1] is around he would move heaven an earth to convince Bush to run so I'm not sure we could actually get him as commissioner. Though I suppose he might switch focus to Jeb. But going back with a PoD of removing Selig... that's something I haven't though of. Hmm, I'm going to have to read the Mitchell Report. Maybe there's something in there that can tie Selig to steroids (a cover-up maybe) to prevent him from becoming commissioner or acting commissioner. I'll add it to the research pile which is growing intimidating. If the TL gets off the ground it won't be for a while.

And for the record, I'm a flaming liberal.

[1]Bush likes to nickname everyone and for Rove it is Turdblossom (also Boy Genius)
