When is the earliest that the electric guitar could have been created?

It's part of a very bizarre scenario, but it'll become clearer as we get further in.

I think a change of title would get you better replies; I thought we were gonna brainstorm new musical instruments ITT, or discuss strange musical instruments of history.

The electric guitar as most people imagine it was around since the 1940s and a little earlier, stemming from attempts to amplify a guitar's sound in the early 20th century. To popularize the new sound in music genres earlier, you'll have to fiddle (no pun intended) with culture a bit to find some way to gain mass acceptance. A countercultural movement probably wouldn't work in the 1940s we know, so unless there's a cause for anti-government sentiment in this era you can't just repeat Woodstock.

@Thesaurus Rex, good idea. I've changed the title. What kind of cultural changes might work?

Could we get a setup in the 1940's where power source and sound system could be worn in a back pack like setup?

Ah yes, you'll all probably work out where this is going in the next question :p A strange timeline indeed.

P.s. Could somebody move this to the after 1900s page?

Thanks for the help @desmirelle. I will take note of that in future.

How late could we extend the use of musket weapons, creating the type of situation where we have lines of infantry marching at each other? These lines would of course have people playing instruments marching among them. Combined with the previous post I think you all get where this is going. As the title suggests, not the most serious timeline. Pretty hilarious image though.
