What if starting at the 250's A.D., what there was more contact between Germanic tribes and the Roman Empire. What if the Germans imported the writing system from the Roman? They would also import the government system of Rome that would replace the decentralized tribal systems. They would also build better cities with the Hippodamian plan instead of those wooden villages that would give up their nomadic ways. What if it became a Christian nation by 363 A.D.? Also, what if agricultural production, clothing styles, architecture styles, musical styles, defense techniques, and other forms of entertainment were imported to the German tribes? What if they become more settled and a united German state called Germania was consolidated and united by 395 A.D.? What if the same things happen to Dacia as well and a nation state was formed for them in 400? This concept is similar to how the Chinese influenced Japanese culture which happened during 200 A.D. Japan never tried to attack China during the ancient period. Would the Roman Empire survived much longer? Would it survive much of the onslaught of the migration period - how much territories it would lose - having another country as a buffer state between the Roman and Barbarian world. What about Islamic invasions? Would civilization collapse or be much simpler in this time period? China influenced many countries, which include Korea, Japan, and Vietnam and THAT was during the ancient period. China still exists today. Look at how much Roman civilization influenced DURING the ancient period? Rome did not attempt to influence anyone during its existence other than their own. Sorry if this sounds like a rant but this is a deep question.
