A Twist of Fate

POD: Nikolai Rysakov is gunned down by the Tsar’s Cossacks prior to being able to make any meaningful action. This has numerous latter ramifications.
“Father, they have tried to kill you. These reforms are breaking the fabric of holy Russia.”
“Son, many said that about Peter. If I were to cut back reforms, do you think that will quell the popular anger?”
“All due respect, my father and my Tsar, but Russia is not Paris. We are a completely different stock than the liberal nations.”
Look. I need not slaughter all of the Marxists. History will slaughter them. As far as I’m concerned if we don’t clean up our act, our window of opportunity to save Russia will be lost.”
“But they almost killed you!”
“Look son. You may not see it yet. But these are the politics of reality. If I do not reform holy Russia, these marxists will seize russia from within and build it in their own satanic mold. We cannot battle with rifles in our own land, we must battle for hearts and souls.”
The tsarevich pouted sad and defeated but nonetheless resigned. His fathers reforms were getting more irreversible, he thought.

“Many of the nobility in this nation see no accountability. Some arrogantly hold land, without even properly utilizing it. They exceptionally held Russia back. I will have inspectors arrive on the estates and determine who is arrogantly milking our people and strength. Any unproductive estate will be handed to you, the men who toil the land. I think the nobility can manage. They already have more than they need. More servants, when they could practically drop a few, expensive foreign furniture when we have lower priced samples in Russia of greater quality, and they will learn to embrace it. Anyway this has the approval of the Duma. You are just as Russian as them.”
