A Topsy-Turvy Tale: A Liberal Republican Party and Conservative Populist Democrats in US Politics

What if the Republican Party had become the bastion of liberal, center-left values, while the Democrats took on a conservative, populist center-right to right-wing ideology?

Here is my idea.

POD: Cleveland wins in 1888. The Republicans win in 1892 and then the Panic of 1893 wrecks the GOP for 1896. In 1896 the GOP nominates McKinley/Bryan (WJ Bryan switched to the Populists in 1892 and formed an alliance with the GOP in 1896. The Democrats nominate a conservative gold-stand Cleveland Democrat like David Hill.

Grover Cleveland……1885-93……Dem
John Sherman……......1893-97……Rep
David Hill…………........1897-01…….Dem
Adlai Stevenson……..1901-09……Dem
Teddy Roosevelt…….1909-17…….Rep
Charles Hughes……..1917-21…….Rep
John Davis..……..…….1921-29……Dem (Democrat Coolidge)
FD Roosevelt……......1929-33.….Dem (Democrat Hoover)
Herbert Hoover…….1933-45…..Rep (The New Deal but a little more pro-business)
D MacArthur…….......1945-53…..Rep (Centrist / hardline anti-Communist)
Eisenhower….........…1953-61…..Dem (Basically the same)
Nixon…………..........….1961-69…..Rep (Basically the same)
JPK Jr……………......….1969-77…..Dem (Democrat Nixon; more charming)

Recent Elections up to 1976
1956…Dewey/Nixon……........…Eisenhower/JPKjr
1960…Nixon/Humphrey......…JPKjr/LBJ
1964…Nixon/Humphrey….......Goldwater/Gore
1968…Humphrey/Harris….....JPKjr/Smathers
1972…Rockefeller/Kuchel......JPKjr/Smathers

There is a much simpler point of departure for this. The major political realignment of the early 20th century was the populists moving to the Democrats in 1932. The 1924 election was a Conservative Democrat, Javis, losing to a Conservative Republican, Coolidge. If Teddy Roosevelt doesn't die in 1919, he is the Republican nominee in 1920. He wins. The Progressive wing of the GOP is ascendant and gathers in the Democrat Progressives. The Conservative wing takes control of the Democrats.

Good point. Roosevelt wins in 1920, retires in 1924. Davis wins in 1924.

No war in Europe and a 2 term FDR might also do it, while the New Deal Coalition and Republican opposition to it and Roosevelt cemented them as the party of the right if Garner (who with no FDR in the race walks the Democratic nomination) wins in 1940 and winds back the more left wing elements of the New Deal and the GoP run to his his left in 1944 and win you could see things settle out differently.
