Speaking as a Californian and avowed opponent of the Bear Flag, I don't like either one, but if I had to choose I'd go with the first one. It's a slight improvement over the current mess of a flag. The second one's awful. No offense meant towards you, but taking a Lone Star Flag of all things and sticking a California grizzly and red star in the white band is just plain ridiculous.

yea...honestly i was trying to make maybe a "template" for all the state flags, so basically all the states come together and say "ok, here is a template (see below) you can do what ever you want to it but dont lose the basic design, ok good?"

what do you think of the concept?

!!Cross post alert!!

inspired by a reddit post (which seems to be missing/deleted?) and they posted it at the flag of Superior (a state proposed but denied and it consisted of the upper peninsula or U P for short) and the major difference was it had 3 stripes insted of 5:

the 5 stripes represent the 5 great lakes
the white represents the shore, snow and the peaceful (ish) nature of the state
and the green represents the Peninsulas and the natural beauty of the state.

I love the second one but Californians would hate it.
You get that unholy abomination out of my face!

Ain't gonna be associated with that OTHER state...
Nah. The current flag was the flag of the Kingdom of Hawaii, so changing it would be pretty disrespectful. And I like the irony of featuring a Union Jack on a US state flag.
Still looks nice, though.

That almost makes me want to petition to give the Yoopers their own state.

My only suggestions are to fool around with the colors a bit more, especially the blue stripes. Maybe adjust the thickness of the white stripe, but I'm not sure on that.

Here's my proposal for a flag of California.
Flag of California.png

The flag as a whole is a stylized image of California itself, showing the Pacific Ocean, the state proper, and the Sierra Nevada range. I've said before I don't like the Bear Flag, but I don't want to completely break with history so the California Lone Star from the first California revolt will remain. (Ignore the seam in the gold band.)

here is the re-design, thoughts?
So here's what I did with your flag:

I reduced the thickness of the white border to about 21 pixels. I thought about adding a black border to that, but I don't know. The green and dark blue colors I took from Michigan's flag. The lighter shade is from Minnesota's flag. I wonder if it'll benefit from an emblem somewhere in there...maybe the green chevron?
