A Syrian-American for US President?

In the late 1800s, at a time in America when the Irish were being depicted as slightly subhuman and prone to violence, the Syrians were being depicted as hard workers and good citizens of their adopted country.

In the 1890s and first decade (or so) of the 1900s, the Syrians were declared legally White (rather than Asian, which would've made them resident aliens even if born in the US)

So, could we have seen a Syrian-American POTUS between the 1912s and 1970s?

I think, perhaps, we could. You'd need a large wave of Syrian Christians in order for it to happen though. A large wave of Muslims and you'd get a large backlash from the new KKK and its fundamentialist, nativist ilk which attacked Catholicism for fuck's sake.

Nader is Lebanese-American. Granted, Lebanon appears to have been in the area of Greater Syria.

Are there any Syrian-American politicians?
Mitch Daniels, the incumbent governor of Indiana, is a first-generation Syrian-American. So it might actually happen in OTL.

I couldn't find any other Syrian-American politicians, but considering that Colombia and Ecuador have had Lebanese-descended heads of state and Argentina had a Syrian-descended head of state, that it wouldn't be too far out there.

Here are some more Lebanese politicians

James Abourezk - US senator from South Dakota in the 1970's - Democrat
The first Arab American to serve in the Senate.

James Abner - US Senator from South Dakota in the 1980's, US Congressman in the 1970's - Republican

Evidently South Dakota was the hotbed for Lebanese politics in the 70's and 80's

Even though not a politician, Casey Kasam would have made a hell of a president.
