A Sword Unpulled

What if the Sword in the Anvil in the Stone really existed. And as part of English law, the Sovereign as proof of their legitimacy had to pull the sword from the anvil every Christmas Eve.
What would be the repercussions if Queen Elizabeth pulled the sword, with ease, every year but this year, Christmas Eve, 2016?

Scientists look into what's wrong with the anvil. Because there's going to have to be something wrong if she suddenly can't pull it out after all these years. It's not like she's pulling it out with raw strength.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

I can accept this not being ASB in the sense that it doesn't require any supernatural explanation. It could simply be a sword sheathed inside an anvil that lead to a rather bizarre custom surviving as the British monarchy became constitutional and ceremonial.

It could be a way to keep the monarch relatively young.
