Brief Background

The Shatt-Al-Arab river, long seen as the natural border between Iraq and Iran has always been in contention. The Turks in the 1800's had claims against the Persians for control of the eastern bank of the river.

middle east 1800's

In the aftermath of world war 1 the middle east would be radicaly with many new states emerging for the first time in hundereds of years. One of those nations was IRAQ. The nation was largely a puppet state of the British with he Hashemite dynasty on the throne. This dynasty would remain on the throne until on July 14 1958 the dynasty was ended when the family was shot up against a palace wall. In place of the monarchy a sovergienty council would be ruling Iraq. the soveriegnty council would be composed of the 3 major ethnic groups of iraq.

The Rise of Tyrants

IRAQ
SADDAM HUSSEIN
Abd al-Karim Qasim in 1958 overthrew the Faisal 2nd of Iraq. Qasim was removed by an army coup in 1963. Abdul Salam Arif was made president.Saddam, in1968, participated in the coup led by Ahmad Hassan al-Bakr that overthrew Abdul Rahman Arif. Al-Bakr was named president and Saddam became deputy. Saddam was also deputy chairman of the Baathist Revolutionary Command Council. In order to cement his power Saddam modernized agriculture, gave women the vote, improved healthcare, and electrified the country. He became a general in 1976; in 1979 he purged elements of the Ba'ath party, who he believed posed a threat to his power.

IRAN
RUHOLLAH KHOMENI
Spend 14 years in exile in France and Turkey. He opposed the Shah's white Revolution. The White Revolution was a series of reforms that gave women the vote, nationalized forests, and reformed farming. The Shah's opulent and oppressive rule largely enabled him to be oblivious of how his people viewed him. When the Shah fled his country in 1979 Khomeni came back and proclaimed The Islamic Republic of Iran: ruled using Sharia Law.

This is the end of the introduction; next update will be the beginning of the war. I will try to have an update up by Monday at the latest.

Beginning of war

sorry about the long delay, had a few problems that needed to be sorted out.

Iranian First strike

On September 20, 1980, preempting the Iraqi invasion :a portion of the Iranian air force takes off early in the morning and after a quick flight the planes arrive over the main iraqi air bases located near Baghdad. The approximately 200 Iranian planes spot the enemy planes parked on the runways. The next several minutes would see the destruction of about 1/3 of the iraqi airforce.

In conjunction with the recent air victory the ayatollah orders the beginning of operation scorching sun. The Iranian shall army invade the kurdish region of iraq from 3 starting points. The northern army composed of 30,000 troops,300 tanks, and 50 helicopters would start in Mahabad. The middle army would be composed of 50,000 troops,300 tanks and 50 helicopters. this group would depart from Banes. The last of the northern armies would be composed of just 20,000 militia forces which would attempt to storm As Sulatymaniyah and take the city by surprise. This army would also be based in Baneh. The 2 northern armies would in a pincer movement converge on the city of Irbil.

Iraqi counter stroke

Saddam, realizing that pressure must be put on the Iranians picks the important cities of Khorrshahr and Ahvaz. The 3 southern Iraqi armies are given 2 months to prepare for the planned offensive. Which is called operation Sand Storm. This offensive would utilize up to 100 aircraft, 150,000 troops and 1,500 tanks. This offensive would be organized very much organized along the lines of the first Iranian offenseve. The armies would be divided into 3 groups: each group has 50,000 soldiers,500 tanks and an assortment of fighters and helicopters. Groups 1 and 2 would be based in Basrah. Group 3 would be based in Ad Diwaniahi. Groups 1 and 2 would also attack Khorramshar in a pincer like movement, but half way to the destination group 2 would split in half with the newly created 4th group would join group 3 in attacking Ahvaz.

The whole goal of this operation would be to force the Iranians to defend the oil producing regions of their country, hopefully taking some wind out the Iranian sails and allow timefor the rest of the Iraqi army to mobilize.

Next update: I will post a map showing troop postiions of both sides and the scope of operations Sand Storm and Scorching Sun.
