A Surviving Yugoslavia?

So something I am wondering would it have been possible for Yugoslavia to not break up during the fall of communism? What is the most likely way for it to survive? Would it be something like a European China or would it resemble other Eastern European countries post-communism? How would Yugoslavia handle the Euro and European Union?

In general what would Yugoslavia look like if it survived to the present day?

Well, the most plausible way to do keep Yugoslavia together is for Milosevic to stop being a Serb fanboy, and instead try to appease the Slovenes as much as he can to stop them from even thinking of leaving Yugoslavia.

Unfortunately, though the federal government didn't exactly bite the hand that fed them, Slovenia saw the ominous signs when Kosovo's autonomy was revoked in favour of Serbia, and bolted as soon as they had the chance. And once Slovenia's gone, Croatia will go (unwilling to bear subsidizing the rest of Yugoslavia's economy), and the rest will follow.

Heres kind of an interesting commentary on this question. He essentially that the inherent federalization and decentralization of the economy that gave it such upward growth in the 60s and 70s carried the seeds of its own destruction.

Tito died and noone could replace him

Recessions and oil shocks and boycots put in place by western democracies hurt the economy. Prosperous regions became resentful of less prosperous and vicevers.

Given regions and localities were so important no one could take the mantle of national leader and a decade of resentment and racism basically tore it apart.

I find the argument pretty convincing

Enforced cultural/linguistic homogenisation after WW2 and/or internal population transfers so that there are no clear borders anymore.
That's how Stalin would have addressed the problem of nationalities, but perhaps Tito was too nice?
