I was doing some reading on India today, and I found it interesting that after Babur's initial conquest of the Delhi Sultan, his son Humayun lost his throne to an Afghan general who established the
Suri Empire. Humayun managed to receive the aid of the Persians in regaining his throne, but it was nearly a decade after he had lost it, and after
Sher Shah Suri, the founder of the Suri Empire, as well as his rather talented son died, dooming the short lived empire to be crushed.
Is it possible for this Afghan state in northern India to survive and expand as the Mughals did? Humayun did have an important role in introducing Persian court culture into India and diluting the Central Asian roots of the Mughals, but what effects might this Afghan state have on India?
With Humayun being aided by the Persians, the Suri might find some aid from the Ottomans, if their hands are not tied. They were certainly active in the Indian Ocean in the 1530s, even after their crushing defeat over Diu in 1509. An alliance between the Suri Emperor's and the Ottoman Sultans seems rather interesting, although I'm not sure how it could come about.
