A surviving Ned Kelly - Affects on Australian culture

Nearly finished Peter FitzSimons excellent book on Ned Kelly, and a thought struck me whilst I was reading about his trial.

If somehow, the Kelly family had had enough funds to secure the barrister they initially wanted, and if somehow the completely stacked prosecution/judge combo had been thwarted in a guilty verdict, what would have happened?

Imagine with a bit of ASB handwavium, he gets off, what would the effect on Australian culture be? Would he still be the legend he is today and would he have the same level of controversy?
