A Spanish Voyage to Australia, 1567-8

In 1567, Alvara do Mendana, with two ships, set sail from Peru and, after eighty days, made landfall in the Solomon Islands. What if the currents and winds had instead deposited the Spaniards, after a few more days, on the eastern coast of Australia? And what if the Spanish followed up with at least some missionary activity on the continent? How would the history of the continent be altered?

He would need to make his way through the Great Barrier Reef to get to shore anywhere north of the tropic of Capricorn. Omce through there was not a lot to attract european there (gold, silver, spices). If he could then make it out and back to Spanish territory then any maps would later aid Abel Tasman to become the first person to map the coast of Terra Australis.
