A southern coup

Let me introduce you to Franklin Buchanan...

To have that, you'd have to have something like the British (1812), Mexico (1847), Japanese (1941), etc attacking and the President just caves and lets them walk in and take what they want. That would be viewed as treasonous and would invoke the oath clause "... defend the constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic.".

Let me introduce you to Franklin Buchanan...

Best,

Secession and a coup are far different things, at least in the American public's mind. Secession has a historical precedent (one could say that the colonies seceeded from Great Britain) and, if one believed that the states were the bastion of freedom, was necessary to stop federal tyranny. However a coup is unprecedented (when a coup was organized shortly after the Revolution Washington told the plotters that he would have no part in it) and completely undemocratic. So even if the plotters do manage to do their coup Congress, the Courts, and public opinion will condemn them and within a few months, at most, the plotters will hang for treason.
