Let us say for instance that sometime in the future, the South decides to go another round at secession. This time around most of the Southern States choose to remain loyal to the Union, but Alabama and Mississippi two states from the fundamentalist christian bible belt South decide to seceed. The legislature of both states become dominated by neo-confederates, and the Klan which had hitherto largely gone underground, resurfaces and membership is at an all time high ala circa 1920's. Mind you not all secessionists are white supremacists, but all agree that the time is ripe for secession. On the pretext that the US government has become too powerful, too intrusive too heathen and American society too diverse, the states of Alabama and Mississippi announce that as of midnight of so and so date, they are no longer part of the United States. A people's militia is hurriedly mobilised comprised of disgruntled gun militiamen, and ex soldiers, various militia groups from all over the midwest rally to their cause and join the breakaway states. Let's assume that some Nat'l Guard units in Mississippi and Alabama choose to remain loyal to the Union. Not much, but some company sized units while others- major regiment and division sized units choose to side with the secessionist faction, it is therefore the loyalist units of the Miss. and Alabama guard that undergo a siege by other secessionist Guard units. Undermanned they cant hold. The same goes for local law enforcement precincts.

They raid local Alabama and Mississippi National Guard Armories and sieze control of federal buildings, local law enforcment departments, and radio and television networks making their demands. The federal government vows that it does not negotiate with terrorists and hastens to deploy federal troops from ft. Benning, the 82nd abn from Ft. Bragg and the 101st from ft. Campbell. Taking on the Alabama and Mississippi National Guard would be no easy feat. Alabama has the largest guard of any state in the U.S. The best of the Federal units mentioned, the 82nd is a light unit and would be in danger of being chewed up by the Armor heavy units of the Alabama Guard. Of course Federal troops from the 82nd would have to be supported by armored units from ft. Stewart and perhaps Fort Knox. Not to mention artillery units attached to each of the divisions mentioned- the 82nd has the 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment, and the 101st is supported by the 1st Battalion (Top Guns), 320th Field Artillery; 2nd Battalion (Balls of the Eagle), 320th Field Artillery; 3rd Battalion (Red Knights), 320th Field Artillery; 2d Field Artillery; C Battery, 1-377th Field Artillery.
No well planned secession would ignore the chemical weapons stock located in Anniston and let us assume that Ft. McClellan is also overrun by armored units from the alabama and mississippi guards, troops in Ft. McClellan are also divided and aside from desertions and defections to the secessionists, for the most part remains loyal but undergo a siege. The same goes for Ft. Rucker the home of US Army aviation and those AH64A's and UH64D's come in handy, against armored units of the alabama national guard, that is assuming F-16's from the Alabama Air National Guard doesnt make short work of those apaches. But let's take it a step further, suppose the 187th Air Fighter Wing of the Alabama Air National Guard joins the secessionists?

A bloodbath ensues and the people's militia is crushed, leaving downtowns Jacksonville and Montgomery to smoldering ruins. Sporadic fighting continues elsewhere in the states but for the most part the rebellion is crushed.
The survivors especially the die hard separatists decide to leave the country altogether, in the hopes of creating a homeland elsewhere. This mass exodus of separatists is not unprecedented in US History. In OTL there was a mass exodus of Confederates after the first CW. From 1865 to 1885, 9000 Confederates chose to immigrate to Brazil and found a colony rather than swear allegiance to the Union. Their descendants still live there today these "Os Confederados" have formed SCV units all over Brazil. It is plausible that the same exodus could occur if they lose again.
There is a mass exodus of Mississipians and Alabamans refusing to swear allegiance to the US government, joined by remanants of their militia they decide join the breakaway Afrikaner homeland in Orania in South Africa. They plan to link up with their Afrikaner bretheren in reclaiming South Africa as a white christian homeland.

What do you all think plaussible?
