WI IDi AMin was less eccentric and through a combination of charm charisima and heavy handed measures manage to unite severl african countries ( uganda, tanzania, kenya, central afrian republic, congo) in sub sahaharna africa in one unified block.
Oppossed to interests of western mineral and oil companies
getting help from USSR but no communist
Dawn of new era for africa or merely a dream for africans as such a alliance will likely fall apart because of greed of individual dictators

Idi Amin wasn't eccentric, he was...either a lunatic or an animal.

His efforts to conquer...pardon, unite several African nations are what finally led to his being driven into exile.

Any notion of African or even Arab unity was a joke due to the many different political and cultural differences.

Didn't Gaddafi try that exact thing for decades?
It would be interesting to read a TL where a saner Gaddafi manages to do this, perhaps turning African Union into something akin to E.U.. In fact, I was going to make such a WI/AHC thread

Of course, it may come off as being apologist to the Jamahiriya government

Can't happen. Nearly all of those countries except maybe Kenya and Tanzania were backed by the West and run by dictators. None of them would give up power to Amin unless they were invaded and overthrown, and Uganda alone can't do that. Plus Europe wouldn't hesitate to send in some paratroopers.
