A Russian Detective in Vancouver

8.00 AM, 7 March 2000 Vancouver

Nikolai Khrezhin was about to leave for the police force. But before he left, he surveyed the room, as he knew, his brother was going to redecorate it. He saw Medals that his dead Father won in the War, the pictures of him next to destroyed German vehicles and on hunting trips, with the American Flag that was hoisted over Cairo. Surprisingly it was intact after so long.

As he was driving along, he saw something odd. Instinctively, he got out and saw it was something in the waste disposal area next to the hospital. Something big. His first instinct was to radio control, and say these words: "Sorry for being late, but i think i have a dead body here. Request Forensics have a look."

8:35, St Mary's hospital

Police were there within minutes. Forensics were combing the scene for clues. Forensics was not the sort of place Television and Internet shows like CSI, Forensic Justice or Murder 911 made it look like. It was painstakingly slow, and was a very delicate process. Any sweat, breath, or fingers in there, and the Evidence is compromised immediately.

Eventually, the forensics found something:

"Sir, i found a Driver's license. It says, Felipe Calderon. Obviously from Down South."

This troubled Khrezhin. Calderon was a reknowned Journalist who ran a blog called Chasing the Dragon of American Politics. What was he doing in Vanocuver? This perplexed him.

11.34 PM.

Khrezhin got into his office at last. Internal Affairs interrogated him as though they were the Spanish Inquisition, but that was on a different issue. As he opened his e-mails, he saw one saying that he was assigned to the case of Felipe Calderon. This was going to be one long day for him, ot say the least...

ARDiV part 2 (Any help would be appreciated here)

12:13, VPD offices

Khrezhin was stuck in the office, wondering where to begin. Forensics had already got several shoeprints when -

"Sir." Interjected a young Police Officer. "we got some camera footage. From the Hospital."

Khrezhin immediately went to the Forensics, and found the Techs were already at work on it. He was approached by one of the sysops, who was very eager:

"Nicky, look at this. I think we have a lead in this."

"Good. Show me then"

"ok, right this way."

Khrezhin ran to the main screen, which was replaying the video over and over again.

What it showed was a pair of suited men carrying the wrapped body to the waste disposal unit. Then it showed them leaving for their car, which led to Khrezhin saying "stop! Play it back 5 seconds earlier, when the car left, and i also want to hear them talk." Compliantly, the tech played it back, which unmistakably said "We'd better do this fast, or George will catch on.". The plate also betrayed its origin in Texas.

Khrezhin had just got his first lead.

After this, The Coroner told him that the death was by single stab wound to the heart.

After lunch, Khrezhin was eventually handed a file by a clerk which gave a possible suspect. He read it attentively:

Name: George Walker Bush.

DOB: 7/6/1946

Gender: Male

Marital Status: Widowed

Current Occupation: Director of Dell, candidate for the Presidency

Biography: George W Bush is the son of George H W and Barbara Bush. His father, a former CIA Agent and representative, committed Suicide in 1974 after His father's links with Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich were discovered. Bush is known for being good with computers, Linguistics and Politics. A major figure for the Right, Bush has appeared on various talk shows and became a major figure in Dell's Board of Directors. Known to be on good terms with MIT Linguist and war hero Noam Chomsky. Curently running for President as a Republican Party.

After reading this, Khrezhin declared "whichever one of the 70 States he is in, i want bush brought here."

8 March 2000, Dallas, TX

George W Bush is scheduled to give a speech at Dallas on the state of the economy. Then he was told by the FBI: "Bush, the Police in Cascadia want a word with you. It is about calderon's murder".

Bush then replies "i'll go there immediately. I do not want to suffer the same fate as my father." The memory of seeing his father hang himself as a result of a political scandal relating to Prescott Bush's dealings with Adolf Hitler.

"tell Michael Dell that i won't be able to get to Miami"

9 March 2000, Vancouver, Cascadia

Police escorted him to the interrogation room. Detective Michael Lawrence told him "sit. Remain calm, we are just taking a polygraph test. Standard procedure sir."

Bush began to sweat because of the sensors being attached to his body.

"we'll start with a test question. Where was your Ford B94 yesterday?"

"i reported it as stolen several days earlier"

an LED went green the moment Bush finished speaking.

"true, but you ddin't answer the question."

Bush replied calmly "I do not know. Why?" (the light went green again)

Lawrence simply went "Question two. Where were you on the night of Calderon's death?"

"i was in Texas on the campaign trail" (Green light)

"very good. You are free to go"

Bush was removing the sensors and said "thank you (departs)"

Khrezhin was in the middle of reading The Decline and Fall of the Third Reich by Professor Donald Rumsfeld (History, Managua University). It was a massive book, around 1300 pages long. But it was easy to read for such a tome. Khrezhin was on Chapter 19, discussing the War's impact on the Nazi economy. This book also debunked David Irving's myth that the Nazis had a strong economy. The book made it on Oprah 2 months ago, thus garaunteeing its position as a best seller.

Lawrence then shows up and tells Khrezhin: "Bush ain't our man!"

Khrehin then replied. Who else could it be?

Here is the Next Part.

Khrezhin was sorting through calderon's hard drive, looking for a story that could have got him killed, when he hit upon a PDF story. It read:

"the crime of the century. How Dell plans with De Guzman corporation for a Duopoly"

You might think that the recent agreements between the two corporate giants are innocent. Many say its business as usual at subic Bay and Silicon Desert. But it is not, as they plan to buy out smaller corporations and software companies and rule unchallenged. such a duopoly will lead them to have a massive stranglehold on the Software market and reign supreme.

I have uncovered some documents from a Mole who wished to remain anonymous, and i haven't heard from him since. These confirm the recent collapse of Jester Corp. was due to market pressures imposed by De Guzman...

And the article read like a rap sheet. Khrezhin then turned around to the techs saying "i got something you might like to see,"

"We gotta get this sent back to the tech lab. they might be able to know something."

Khrezhin knew that this story was not sole evidence, nor would it implicate bush in the deaths as it was not published yet. But maybe they had a lead in this case.

After work, Nikolai was going to go to a speaking tour by Noam Chomsky at Vancouver University called "Chomsky: linguistics, the war and the elections"

Vancouver University. 7.30

"the war, was the worst experience of my life, other than my wife's recent passing. General william sherman said War is Hell, and he was right. My Marine platoon and i had entered Bangui on June 5 1957. The whole city was deserted. I had a very itchy trigger finger, as i was unsure of SS partisans coming out to ambush us, then i heard something. A group of soldiers and i entered this warehouse where the sound was coming from. The stench of death was sickening, and pervaded a sense of foreboding as i crossed the threshold. We discovered what it was. Rats had come by the thousand to this warehouse filled with bodies. Intel concluded that the victims died of gassing. Turns out the Nazis didnt have time to burn all their victims before we came along..."

After the lecture, Khrezhin approached chomsky about the calderon affair and asked him a question:

"sir, do you know anything about the death of Felipe calderon"

"yes, i do. Calderon was sifting through some muck about many corporations. If anyone wanted him dead, it woul-"

Chomsky suddenly collapsed on the floor. There was blood from his left lung pouring out.

"hello, this is khrezhin. Emergency one. Civilian down. repeat. Civilian down"

March 11, 00:52 Vancouver Hospital.

Khrezhin was waiting outside, then a doctor came in through the sliding doors:

"Will he make it? We need to question him."

"I did tests on the patient, and we know he was shot in the lung with a specific poison named "Hemlock 3.2". There is no known antidote to the poison. At most, he has 30 minutes left to live, and is currently conscious"

"can we go see him?"

"sure, knock youself out".

As Khrezhin walked into chomsky's room, he saw an hourglass emptying itself. He knew he had a limited time left, so every question mattered. This was going to be a very long half hour to say the least.

Chomsky: So, what did you want?

Khrezhin: We just want to know who wanted calderon dead.

Chomsky: As i said, Many corporations had an enemy in him. He famously exposed Nestle's abuses in Africa against the Congolese.

Khrezhin: Nestle CEOs were dragged before the senate because of that article. But he must have stepped on VERY powerful toes.

Chomsky: Yes, i cannot think of any fom my head, but since time is short, i will tell you something.

Khrezhin. Go on.

Chomsky: a few weeks ago, Khrezhin said he was working on the software industry's dirty laundry, and he said that this was bigger than the Nestle affair in '90. I asked him what it was a-

Khrezhin. Chomsky? Help! help! he's having a seizure!

As Khrezhin was escorted out by a Guard, he saw the Hospital staff try to resuscitate Chomsky, to no avail.

Russian detective with this (non-Westernized, indicating relatively recent arrival) type of name in Vancouver police force is ASB, if USSR's fate ITTL is remotely similar to OTL or better. There is no Russian detective in Toronto police or any other regional police forces today (there's single girl who works in Community Relationships dept of York regional police), despite numerous applications from 200,000-strong community. We're not worthy of being Canadian cops. And, if "Khrezhin" is a Canadian-bred and raised, he would be "Nick Krezin" (guess what his nick would be) for anyone but his aging parents (Lib. leader is known to whole Canada as Michael Ignatieff, despite being Mikhail Georgievich Ingatiev, if properly transliterated from Russian).

Well, its POD is the Fall of Moscow in 1941, with a massive diaspora from Russia to America and Canada.

So Mr. Khrezhin is second-generation Canadian? No way in hell he would keep his unaltered last name. I've buddy who immigrated in Canada from USSR in early 1970s and he was very strongly advised by Immigration authorities to change his "Weird Eastern European" last name (one of standard Ashkenazic Jewish last names) to something more "Canadianized". Wave of immigrants in 1940s would be under very serious pressure to "Canadianize" their last names or change them. "Khrezhin" would turn to "Smith" or version of Kresin/Krasin/Krezin or something of this nature.

Duly noted. I am considering a version 2 of TTL. Perhaps you can help me on the shared worlds.
