A Romney/Sanders ticket in 2008

From what I had read Sanders used to be an independent, what would happen if Mitt Romney wins as the republican nominee and picks the independent senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders in 2008, would this cause Romney to win in 2008..

Sanders was (and still is) an Independent but that doesn't mean he's between the two parties or has anything to do with the Republicans.

If Romney even considered this the idea of the GOP picking a Socialist VP, would be laughed down, with the Party Elders looking at each other wondering if It was too late for giving the race to Gingrich.

Why would Romney, a fiscally conservative Republican, pick an independent leftist who caucuses with the Democrats as his VP? But hey, if somehow he does it, then Obama might win in a landslide that hasn't been seen since Reagan.

I think Romney would pick Sanders as VP if his opponent in 2008 is Hillary clinton, Romney gets the Leftist and progressive vote, unless Nader gets the leftist votes that a Romney/Sanders ticket gets a landslide, having obama as the nominee of democrats and ralph nader as the green nominee would kill romney/sanders chances to win.

No. They would still go for Clinton, and all it would do is alienate most Republicans.

All this would do would be to convince the Republicans that Romney was insane and Democrats and progressives that Sanders was. The two men were the exact opposites on almost every conceivable issue--at least Trump and Sanders shared some common ground on trade! The Republican national convention, for one thing, would never even nominate Sanders for vice-president. (We tend to forget that it is the convention which officially decides on this because ordinarily in modern times the convention goes along with the presidential nominee's choice. But the reason it has gone along with the presidential nominee's choice is that the presidential nominee ordinarily chooses someone who is ideologically acceptable to the convention. In OTL in 2008 there was a threat of a delegate revolt if McCain even chose Joe Lieberman! Can you imagine what kind of revolt there would be would be if it chose a self-proclaimed socialist instead?! The word "socialist" has long been anathema to all Republicans, even the most moderate. For that matter, even if Sanders were otherwise a moderate, just his being pro-choice on abortion would be enough to generate a revolt!) And for anyone on the left, Sanders would be either a sell-out or crazy to agree to such a ticket. A democratic socialist serving as running mate to Mr. Bain Capital?

No Republican in 2008 is going to win anyway for the simple reason that the country was undergoing the greatest financial meltdown since the Great Depression under a Republican president. But this idea is a sure way to guarantee a major right-wing third party and a landslide GOP defeat.

It would never happen. Republican leadership would think Romney insane for even considering it and Sanders would never accept. I don't even know how you are supposed to reconcile Sanders with Romney's hard shift to the right in the primaries. Is Romney going to adapt Sanders' protectionist, anti-wall street, and single payer policies that are anathema to Romney's core political beliefs?

Ralph Nader is completely irrelevant in 2008. And Sanders in 2008 is an unknown (on a national level) socialist from Vermont, not someone will would ever win Romney many votes from the left. And no Republican was going to win in 2008 let alone in a landslide. Vice Presidential picks rarely have much impact and they certainly don't save candidates in a wave election against their party.

The only way this could happen is if one or both of them suffered severe brain damage and their personalities changed completely. Which might make for an interesting TL ,actually. (No Longer Bernie anyone?).

Even if you have Romney be his 2008 'Liberal Republican' self,he's gonna get crapped on if he chooses Sanders.

Besides,he may flip flop a lot but he isn't that politically suicidal. Plus,Romney is kind of the epitome of what Sanders campaigned against and really,it would just get the GOP to abandon him altogether as in,just from the moment he decides to choose Sanders.

As other posters have noted,if it's in either 2008 or 2012,Obama wins in a landslide. Maybe a slightly smaller one in 2012 but regardless,a landslide.
