Wasn't Cyndi Lauper once touted as another Madonna? Perhaps with different career choices she could actually make it. She was pretty big in the 1980s.
WI: I am born 25 years earlier(1964) as a woman. Still have basically the same mind (that is, im a lesbian). I manage to seduce Madonna and in her sleep, I murder her. Then I make the hit single "How I seduced and murdered Madonna" in prison. It becomes an instant hit.
Too dark and twisted?![]()
Cyndi kind of sabotaged her career by getting too "serious". People loved the lighthhearted stuff like girls just wanna have fun, shebop, goonies r good enough, etc and the videos with Captain Lou (R.I.P.), but when she released True Colors and went for the soft rock approach it caused her fanbase to dwindle. Maybe if she kept her earlier approach she could have stayed relevant, and maybe even could have been considered the "Anti-Madonna" (she never tried to play up her sexuality like Madonna did).
Maybe you could have Kylie Minogue become famous a couple years early. Then the only issue is for her to have more success in the American market.

Kylie's not a bad idea, but she's a bit too young, IMO. She'd only turn 17 in 1985, which is pretty early to have an international hit single. Plus, part of Kylie's problem with catching on in the USA was that she was marketed as if she were a little girl. The only singles we got over here before 2001 were "I Should Be So Lucky," where she looks like she's 12 in the video, and #$!&ing Loco-motion, the most annoying song in human history.
What about Vanity? She left Vanity 6 around 1984 and went solo, but she really didn't have any big hits. Maybe if she got involved with someone other than Prince and started out solo, she may have been Madonna's rival.
My money's also on Cyndi Lauper. Have her write more hits and she could have done it. Not that I know what the POD would have to be to get her to do that, mind you....
Or maybe if she didn't turn into a huge crackhead.
