A Really rich Canada?

It does. They're just not quite economical to produce yet with current technology.

It's making the oil companies a hell of a lot of money. And that money is all leaving Canada, making the US richer.

Also, the governments aren't taxing the resource, instead they're giving the oil companies billions. Less money for Canadians, more for the rich bastards on Wall St.

Quiet Money

I was hoping simple money management was enough. It has become clear a truly strong CDN. dollar makes for many problems. It greatly alters what Canada can and must do. A Canada coming out of WW 2 with money in the bank and atomic bombs is a strange creature to me.

BTW, we in quebec don't recieve the most in perequations btw, its an old rightwing canard that need to die. We send actually a lot of taxes to Ottawa as others, and we pay our social-democracy.

Also,a Canada richer.. for who? Like USA, richer for the rich, the corps and all? or a stronger repartition of riches to the poors and all, a stronger social-democracy?

VAT Taxes

Denmark and other countries use value added taxes to keep money evenly spread among its people. Could Canada benefit with these taxes? Start a tax against money speculators?

Canada will still be annexed by the United States, so less debt makes it a juicier target

I remember when I first started reading internet AH. There were too noticeable trends. The assassination of US Presidents and the annexation of Canada or parts of Canada by the US.

Longer oil embargo.

The economic problem with the Oil Sands then (as now) isn't the sustaining cost, but rather the high initial capital cost. If the embargo lasts longer, the extraction equipment and infrastructure planned would actually get finished and extraction could commence. Couple that with a sweatheart deal with the US for inflation-fixed prices for, say, 10 years and the Oil Sands would become extremely profitable.

A major butterfly would the much earlier rise of western conservatives, likely through the PC proper rather than an alt-Reform party. That would further increase the pressure to keep the debt low.

Western Cons.

Would they stay in the Canadian way and work to keep Middle Class strong? Or become like American Cons. and shovel everything to the rich?;)
