A realistic Red Dawn scenario

the only scenario I'd ever thought of as even vaguely possible was the "Not This August" scenario where the USSR and Red China never have a falling out, and really work at cutting us down... those two nations together have a significant chunk of the world's population under it's umbrella...

How do you get them over the Pacific Ocean without being bombed and drowned though? Yes, China has a significant chunk of the world's population (mostly thanks to China, population-wise the USSR doesn't amount to much) but the USA is the third largest population-wise and third largest in land area (according to the CIA World Factbook and the UN statistics division, but Wikipedia in their all-knowing idiocy disagrees). That's a big country to occupy even for China and the USSR; especially when your Red China (backwards and using 1940s technology in 1980; and no way to send anyone to Taiwan let alone to Hawai'i or mainland USA) or the USSR where you realize most of those nuclear weapons are "permanently" aimed at YOU.

It's like none of you remember the mind control invasion in Red Alert 2.

...so for fun, pretend our ICBMs were knocked out, how much damage could we do with our SLBMs and non-us based bombers?

More than enough. The Silent Service was the true edge in MAD that kept the Cold War from heating up. The Soviets never knew where our nuclear-armed subs were, so stopping those ships from launching their warheads could never happen.

Moscow would see a final sunrise no matter what, and the Politburo knew it. What good is there in victory if you never have a chance to enjoy it, even a post-nuclear war one?

Germany and China fall to Communism after the First World War and merge into the Ussr.Ussr industrializes like mad and quickly overruns the rest of eurasia in the late 30s ,safe from land threats decides to build a navy to conquer the last holdouts to the worker revolution.

Yes, but the USA and Japan hold out to make the Pacific a great bastion.
Meanwhile, a failed-artist German immigrant finds work as an illustrator for science fiction magazines, notable for his stylish militaristic uniforms....

I'd figured that you'd need something like The Price of Freedom's scenario, which involves the Soviet Union establishing an extremely effective ABM system and basically tells the US to surrender or be destroyed by nuclear weapons.

It's not a perfect solution, but it's probably the only way you could do it: to truly render the American nuclear deterrent, in all its forms, so weakened that another country could dictate terms at warhead's point.

it's been a while since I read the book, but IIRC, there was mention of some rather effective anti-ICBM hardware on both sides... also, IIRC, it was mentioned that both sides had suffered some cities destroyed by nukes that leaked through the defenses. Bear in mind that this book was written way back in the 60s (?), and imagined that there had never been a rift between the two communist giants, and that they had been working on improving their technology for a long time, all for the purpose of invading us. Don't know just how possible that is, but is there any other scenario that would work better for invading the USA?
