So, I am planning a TL where Iyasu V have Ras Tafari assassinated, and we thus have a world without emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. I'm thinking Iyasu would probably be overthrown anyway, and Zauditu made empress. Ras Tafari became involved in the conspiracy against Iyasu quite late. Of course his prominence on the battlefield against Ras Mikael was important, but the rebels have other good commanders, and Wollo was not prepared, while the rebels were.
However the first thing I'm interested in is who would become Zauditu's regent without Ras Tafari. I'm thinking her husband Ras Gugsa might have a good chance. This would of course result in a much more reactionary ethiopia not willing to listen to foreign diplomats, and probably quite uninterested in countering slavery and slave raids. Something that really could give headaches to the European Colonial Powers.
