A Quiet August Day-A Collaborative New Union timeline

August 18, 1991: The plane carrying a group of hardline Soviet politicians including the Deputy Defense Minister crashes on it's way to Crimea, killing all onboard and while foul play is suspected, nothing is ever proven.

August 20, 1991: Mikhail Gorbachev returns to Moscow for the signing of the New Union Treaty, which reforms the Soviet Union into the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics.
 
August 26, 1991: Kim Jong-il dies in a car accident in Pyongyang, leaving his brother Kim Pyong-il as heir to the North Korean "throne".

September 2, 1991: Voters in Russia ratify the New Union Treaty by a 84.4% "Yes" vote with the "Yes" vote in some Central Asian republics reaching 90%.

October 11, 1991: Voters in the Ukraine ratify the New Union Treaty with 63.7% voting "Yes", the lowest so far.
 
September 22, 1991: Azerbaijan votes to ratify the New Union Treaty with 68.4% of voters voting "Yes".

November 2, 1991: Ukrainian nationalists led by Oleh Tyahnybok claim that the Ukrainian referendum was rigged by Soviet authorities to favor the "Yes" vote but are unable to produce evidence to prove their claims of voter fraud.

November 14, 1991: The last republic to ratify the New Union Treaty, Kyrgyzstan, votes to ratify the New Union Treaty with 91.3% of voters saying "Yes" to the New Union Treaty.

December 2, 1991: Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev announces that a new constitution for the "Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics" would be created no later than mid-1993.

February 20, 1992: The constitutional convention tasked with creating a new constitution for the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics convenes in Moscow. While the delegates are largely on agreement regarding the need for a federal system of government, debates begin on whether a presidential, semi-presidential, or parliamentary system of government would suit this reformed USSR begin.
