i was just looking over the Proposals And War Aims That Didn't Happen Thread (particularly, this proposed map of additions to the United States) and i was reminded of a concept that i've had in mind for my ASB ATL for a while. to try to put it simply, i wanted to get 65 states in the Union by TTL's present-day for narrative reasons and, naturally, that included an expansion into OTL's Canada, which i decided to link to an alternate version of the War of 1812. i eventually gravitated towards the idea that the peace terms at the end of the alternate war saw the Americans be ceded the entirety of Rupert's Land but, in the decades following, increased settlement in the area by the *British--similar to what happened in Texas--saw the areas of Rupert's Land on the Labrador Peninsula ceded back to *Britain and that's part of how American geography got to the way it was ITTL

anyway, i was looking at the proposal map i linked above, which as you can see includes both Upper and Lower Canada along with OTL territorial expansions. the thought that occurred to me is this: in the wake of the American Revolution, or possibly a different conflict in the early 19th century, could those parts of *Canada be annexed by the Americans only for a homegrown secession movement to form which then successfully breaks off to rejoin *Canada/the *British Empire? (i'm using asterisks here for simplicity--alternate names and such, i don't want to distract from the point)

and a second point regarding this: if this successful secessionist movement takes place, how would it affect the Confederacy in the same century? (if it still occurs at all, of course--i think it probably would, since the issue of slavery would have to be dealt with eventually)
