A question for the panel - what's the terrain of northern ontario like?

The northern half, basically north of lake nipigon. Hope I've spelt that right

You did. :)

The area is more than a little hostile to armored vehicles, particularly the bogs north of Lake Superior. Those will suck up armored vehicles like quicksand. Harder rocky areas don't have that problem, but the dense forests in that part of the world provide a whole other challenge.

Thank you that's exactly what I wanted to know. It also sounds like good defensive terrain.

Sorry its how I look at things and definitely sounds like quite defensible
Oh no problem. And while it certainly wouldn't be easy to attack through there it also would be a somewhat difficult to defend. It's massive, with nearly non-existent transportation infrastructure. It really is just miserable terrain in the middle of nowhere.

It is to a point. Not many natural barriers to observation aside from the forests, but not exactly nice territory for a mechanized army to push through.

So somewhere you could leave a tripwire force of militia in case anyone is dumb enough to try and get through it?

And thank you both. I look at a map all I want but having someone who actually knows is so much better

I’ve lived in Ontario my entire life and I’d say others have summed it up rather nicely.

Bogs, dense forests, lakes and rocky hills. I’ve gotten lost hiking through those woods and I’m just going to say it wasn’t fun, if I had broken my leg out there I quite possibly would have died before someone found me.

During the 1940’s all of these problems would be even worse, with almost no infrastructure including roads and railways.

Supplying the fuel and spare parts needed to keep tanks running would be almost impossible, even before you get into problems regarding terrain.

That last picture I took myself, as another user pointed out probably the worse tank country in North America. Waging armored warfare is for all intents and purposes, impossible.

Oh yeah nobody is going to be driving a tank through that, or even a leg infantry division. Someone told me the defence of BC was best handled by a few dozen drunken lumberjacks with dynamite. This looks like a similar situation

I must thank you all btw. The WTCPC timeline is important to me and I want to get it right. And the reason I think of upper and lower rather than north and south? I live in New Zealand and that's how we think because north North Island or south South Island just don't work lol

The time to invade Ontario from the north would be winter, when the ground is hard. And you use the frozen rivers as roads.
This still leaves the problem of trees, though ...

And the drunken lumberjacks with dynamite. I imagine two or three sticks going off on a frozen river loaded with tanks would not be a good thing for the tanks

We are talking about ice like this:
ice-fish-hole.jpg

Two or three sticks of dynamite will make two or three fishing holes.
Any not-idiot will space out the tanks.
The hole will freeze again once the lumberjacks are dead.
To reinforce the ice you spread straw over it and pour water over it.

Lol I stand corrected. That's some ice
