A question about Al Smith

Who would Al Smith have listened to primarily if he were President?

I think the idea though is that Smith plays a big part in this TL, but is not the main POD. Something else is. Like a Pope Adolphus, or whatever name Hitler's going by.

You have to remember, kevvy, that medieval Holy Roman Emperors, Kings of France, Kings of England, and so forth, generally weren't inclined to take orders from the Pope. So any twentieth-century Catholic US President taking orders from the Pope...that's just not happening.

There people genuinely concerned that Smith and Kennedy would take orders from the Pope. They were mostly poorly-educated and white.

They were also protestant too. It was also one of the three things that shafted him in the election. He was a "wet" politician, or one that opposed prohibition, he was an Irish Catholic, and he was running against the party that seemingly brought prosperity. He literally chose one of the worst times to run.

Yup. Kennedy, however, chose one of the best times to run. The economy was good, the New Deal and the Democratic Party were THRIVING, and there was a lot of social progress being made. Fireworks may have happened in the '60s, but they were built in the '50s.

He was the typical northern politician to many Midwesterners and Southerners. White, Irish Catholic, wet, and from a big city. That turned many people off.
