My understanding of the Caporetto provlem is that it's a combination of poorer training, ill-informed discipline, gas they couldn't block with their masks, and, worst of all, bad strategy. Specifically, the main part of the Italian army was in the front trenches. Bad plan when defending, since it exposes one's units to more degradation.
