A proposal about the OTL Maps

I am getting very tired of there being four OTL Maps threads. However, at this point I'm not sure anyone's willing to tackle the mess (all 9,038 posts and growing) all by themselves. So I have a suggestion for a project that will end this silliness: Archive & Destroy.

1) A group of us divide each thread (The Blank Map Thread; Base Maps from 550 BC to Modern Day, all in UCS; The new Our Timelines Map Thread; All The OTL Maps from 500 CE to 2007) into a series of small chunks of pages.
2) Each participant gets a section, which he will then scour for maps. Each map will be linked to/archive on the wiki in an enormous list organized by area/time.
3)Then, we get rid of all the threads and make one or two new threads for the REST OF TIME.

Or at least until we get annoyed again. ;)

Before there's any talk about UCS, I hope to ignore that. This project is only about archiving, not religious wars. We just archive the maps as they are. Later we can worry about quality control, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Remember the more people who join, the less work everyone has to do individually.

I think that after we catalogue and update everything maybe we could come up with some way of selling them in a historical atlas with profits going to the website to help out Ian or is that impractical?

We don't have the permission of every mapmaker. Some are inactive, some are outright banned. The legalities involved would be trickier than a jackalope.

Agreed. frankly, I'd just like to sort out this mess more then sell anything anyways.

Well whilst you're doing the catalogue you would be seeing which posters were banned and which ones weren't wouldn't you? Thus you could just multi-PM the posters who aren't banned and ask for permission. Those who don't respond are either inactive or haven't given permission.

From there it would be a simple thing to just use the maps that aren't derivative works (which basically cuts out all of those maps derived from the maps of Joaquín de Salas Vara de Rey).

Perhaps we could have three threads: Map archive1, Map archive 2 (both locked and stickied) and an active thread starting with the updated Globe UCS maps currently being worked on.

I can help out as well, though I'm working on the aforementioned map updates.

That was always the intention and I have already done it with some sets of OTL maps.

Basically go to this page, make new articles and fill them with clusters of maps you find from the threads. Group them by things like basemap used, colour scheme used and who made them.

AH! Excellent, glad you've done that. Very sorry I missed it. Will get on that.

I agree with the above, though I think we should have two active map threads, one for the GCS and one for other maps, and perhaps a third in the future if the Q-BAM ever starts getting alot of versions of itself done.

That could work better.
