A Portuguese TL, So tem um Deus. Portugal Inherits. Burgundy...

CHAPTER 3.
The Empire.

¨By the Grace of God, King of Portugal and the Algarves on this side of the seas and beyond them in Africa and Lord of Guinea, Duke of Burgundy,Brabant, Flanders,
and Luxembourg. (etc)¨

Filipe I, King of Portugal and the Algarves, allowed execellent positions
to Burgundian Nobles, he also allowed Burgundian Traders and Merchants
to trade more freely in the Portuguese Zones in Africa, he also made a exception to the Burgundian Merchants/Traders to trade on the Spanish Parts of the World ((thus Zones like Puerto Rico etc.) Burgundian Merchants would become quite Popular in Europe, Places in the Low Countries like Amsterdam would also become quite more richer, not yet as rich as Lisbon but it would still be considerd Rich, Filipe accepted and appointed a new Governor of the Burgundian Country, After Rosàrio De Braganza retired he went back to Portugal, and continued to live there with his family in Visu. Most of the Burgundian liked the rulling of their new Duke Filipe I, he even established more Churches
in the Burgundian States Counties and Cities, and allowed Burgundians to settle the Moroccan Coast aswell to start a new life there, by coastal raids were still common.
He gave more power to the Burgundian Nobles they could travel anywhere in the Empire if the had a valid reason, for example serving under the army.
Other Burgundian Counties states would alo have a few governors that were appointed by the King of Portugal.
Many Burgundians would also participate on slavery to the West Africans and Moors, these slaves would not only be send to Portugal but also to Burgundy now. the wealth of these slaves would go to both to the slave traders either Burgundians, etc or Portuguese.

4 years after Nuno da Gabo, discovered Terra de Cabo, (Basically Alaska, he discovered a route via the north-west passage.) During the same year Bartholomeu Dias discovered The Cape in and made expeditions in voyages in Congo aswell, he came back to Lisbon where he would later set up another Voyage and expedition in Africa.
Portuguese Nobles and also retired Generals that used to battle in North Africa tried to encouraged the king to expand further in the Buffer Zone, North Africa.
Filipe I like his ancestors was also ambitions to expand in North Africa, he had the Reconquista Mentality, The Young King is only 16 years old, before that the Kingdoms were being controlled by a close relative to Filipe I as a regent,
Filipe I would also improve the Infrastructure in Burgundy similar to Portugal, and build more churches, schools, and posts there.
Filipe would also improved the Navy of Burgundy by a bit in the Low Countries, he also spended more on the Fortifications in Morocco, by the 1505s
In Tanger, Ceuta and Safi, he also builed more Castles in the Maghreb aswell and improved the trading posts in there and communication, as the Comminacation in the Kingdom was a bit slower then usual. After the Discover of Terra de Cabo, The Pope and the King of Portugal came up with a treaty which was agreed by even Spain aswell, that the terriotories in the Arcitc belong to Portugal, and they would also create a line for with making the Arcitic a Portuguese Mare Clausum. however in the treaty that was made in Barcelona, it consisted that
1. Portugal can only trade in the region

2. Portugal ¨Terra de Cabo.¨ is the only land they can take.¨
3. For Exchange, if Filipe I has a daughter it has to marry a Castillian Noble.

Terra de Cabo,
((Portugal doesnt fully control this land yet, this is only what they claim.

Joana of Castile deceids to marry Phillipe of Cleves, which has a kid with her that would soon become the King of Castile/Aragon.

In 1496 Filipe I came up with the conclusion and deceided that the only way to expannd freely and gain more trade power in the mediterrtean was to capture the city of Tetouan, which also was one of the cities that were major trade hub for barbary slavery, Morocco in The Riff Region, he orderd the Governor of Safi and Ceuta to unite to unleash a strike on the city
The Governor of Ceuta, Fernào de Meneses, was requested to launch a attack on the Tetouan, In October 27 1497 he prepared a siege of the city, he recruited
a Huge Army of Men, mostly from Portuguese Origin, but there were Burgundian Nobles and even mercenaries hired from the King these Mercenaries were from English Origin, in total it consisted 15,300 men, he also had plans on requesting the Governor of Burgundy to join the battle but he choosed not to,

Meanwhile The Wattasd king, Abu Abd Allah al-Sheikh Muhammad ibn Yahya.
After he heard the news from spyers, he also deceided to plan a army to defend Tetouan, they army would consist of
around the same number 17,500 Men, this army contained numerous converted iberians and even Andalusian and captives,
But most of this army were from the Riff Region, 1 of the most trained warriors Morocco had.

The Portuguese King allowed Fernao de Meneses acess to the use of Burgundian Navy, the navy Portugal had in the battle easily outclased the Wattasids by a long shot,
They were even more confident now.

The Wattasids were already a declining power, they had difficult acess to seaports which were captured by the Portuguese
thus became weaker as time went by,Fernao de Meneses deceids to wait until mdnight to capture the city, when most of them are in sleep and bad shape, he had a plan to launch a suprise attack, but this was already known by the King of Morocco, In 31th October, the battle starts, Muhammed ibn Yayha deceids to wait for the enemy to attack to launch a counterattack, Fernao de Meneses deceids to split up the army and form a square Formation, 7,500 man each half, the battle starts near Tetouan and Ceuta,
Portugal used 21 ships in this battle, 8 of them were Burgundian, the Captain of these ships were a Burgundian Noble, Johan von de Broek, appointed personally by the King of Portugal, the 2 armies approach, With the Moroccan Army now being in a bad position, cause their Navy got destroyed near Ceuta by the 21 Portuguese Ships, which were Galleons, The Portuguese-Burgundian Army (But mostly Portuguese had a way better Artillery then the Moroccan, it consisted valuable artillery and items from Northern Europe, + Supplies and food from there too, there were also Doctors in Battle, Fernao de Meneses meets to Moroccan Army with half of his troops, the other 7,500 were at the back of the square, The Portuguese Army would break quiet easily trough the Wattasid Defense. however this soon would stop when the Moroccans gained 5,000 more manpower this time these 5000 man came from Marrakesh Region and even from Regions in Algeria, Fernao de Meneses didnt expect this, however he would not stop and give up, he deiceded to bring his other 7,500 in battle, resulting it in 15,300 men again it would be 15,300 vs 20,000 but the Moroccan Army would still fail to break trough the Portuguese Attack and Artillery, nevertheless they had the Navy aswell, and Technology, after a few hours, many shout ¨Victoria!¨ and the Moroccan Army retreated to Marrakesh to recover from the Deceive Victory from the Portuguese, The Moroccan Ships were captured aswell, + 7,300 Moroccans were captured in battle and were sold or killed, Fernao de Meneses lost a finger and a eye, but after the battle he launched a siege on Tetouan, which turned out to be rather easily it only lasted 3 days, he was suprised when he saw how many captives were there, who were Christian, he orderd to Release them and allow them to go back to their own Countries or start a new life in Portuguese Tetoun, after the Battle, Ibn Yahya was pissed, he had to wait days perhaps months for the Moroccan Army to recover, he requested help from his nebouring country Tlemcen but they only gave him a small amount of support, Fernao de Meneses after the Battle deceids to capture a few cities in the Riff Region, seeing that the Moroccan Army is still recovering, he succesfully and easily captured 2 more cities. and again released captives and resettled on it. This Victory would be known for years.

Battle of Tetoun (1497)

Meanwhile, Nuno De Cabo, regarded as one of the best Explorers ever, discovering a new Route to Asia, when he discovered Terra de Cabo (Basically TL Alaska.)
He thought it was China, cause there were many poeple there, Nuno De Cabo had this feeling that he is probably very close to it, he asked for Filipe I to fund his 3rd Expedition, to find a route to China, and explore more lands, he left Portugal and arrived at somewhere south to Terra de Cabo,
he went down south-wards where he discovered a island looking shaped ammount of land, turned out it wasnt a island (Refering to Kamatchaka)
He sails more south, and than he sails more west, exploring more of the so called ¨island´ he arrives at a mysterious island, and proclaims that he is in China....

Okay I love where you're going with this but was it even possible for a ship in that time period to use the Northwest Passage?

It actually was, problem is the ice and coldness, but they would spend more money then usual. and Nuno De Cabo discovered a route with no Artic Sea Ice, and that was the only route trough the entire passage. but this is for this Scenario.

I dont really think it was, the northwest passage is frankly terrifying, even post-industrial revolution ships got screwed

I can give OP the benefit of the doubt with Portugal getting lucky though, or maybe they just colonize Canada first and create a land route like Spain did with Mexico, that could work better I think

Ill say tho that this isnt a problem that can be solved by throwing money at it, trust me, the british tried

Yeah, the Portuguese thought that there would be trade in this Passage, Portugal was lucky with the discovery, but trade is simply not possible, Filipe I will realize this soon.

In fact no. The only reason because of now (like in 2023) is a possibility is just because 200 years of global warming. The Franklin Expedition reflects very well what you can expect in this passage

Yeah, the Portuguese thought that there would be trade in this Passage, Portugal was lucky with the discovery, but trade is simply not possible, Filipe I will realize this soon.
Still, the portuguese atempt could leave some lasting cultural impact on the local population(inuits and co), that could be cool for your TL

Not a match maker myself but maybe a burgundian princess if there's any available? If he wants to consolidate his claim to it further
Otherwise probably someone from England as the Portuguese Empire here seem to be actively courting the british for their alliance

True, but i dont think Portugal wants to really colonize Canada rn, they claimed Terra de Cabo cause why not, better then nothing.

Also yeah I might consider someone from England probably.
