A Plausible Presidency?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone think that a William Scranton Presidency is plausible? I'm talking of him being the GOP Nominee in '64. Could he have beaten LBJ or would have '68 been more plausible?

All I know about Scranton was that he was a Rockefeller Republican and he tried stopping Goldwater from the nomination in '64. From my understanding he was well liked by people of both parties.

No LBJ was unstoppable in 1964. Coming off the heels of a popular president who has just been killed, with a popular program, a strong economy, peace and prosperity the GOP would be lucky to keep LBJ from winning a double-digit victory.

I think him becoming the nominee is more plausible. I'll have the PoD be after California, Goldwater seems about to win the nomination. Then Scranton offers to debate him, and unlike IOTL Goldwater accepts, hoping to win over Republicans to his vision. Instead, Scranton exceeds all expectations and wins the debate, telling Goldwater "why fix it if it 'aint broke?" Letters flood into delegates asking for Scranton to be the nominee, and Scranton becomes more well-known. Goldwater fails to win a majority on the first ballot and on the third-ballot Scranton is nominated.

In 1968, it is possible that if the convention was brokered or Nixon didn't run he could emerge as a compromise candidate. Scranton would then win the election probably by a wider margin than Nixon IOTL.

Interesting. I'll have to research Scranton more and find out what his take on Vietnam was and what he would've done domestically and foreign policy wise.

I would have to agree than a GOP victory in '64 post JFK assassination, is damn near impossible. Scranton in '68 however could be a possibility.

If Scranton wins the nomination, Johnson wins but by a lower margin. Wallace runs as a third party and carries the OTL Goldwater Southern states.
