Lady Mary Tudor, Electress of Palatine

A Passionate Love

On 1539, the 23 year old heiress of Henry VIII, Lady Mary would passionately fall in love with Philip of Palatinate who had been courting her and she would be in crossroads whether to accept to give up her own succession rights and marry for love, she was introduced to Philip of Palatinate by her own stepmother, Anne of Cleves and the love affair would be passionate for a month and in the middle of 1539 she would choose her own mother’s memory or marrying her husband..

Mary had to choose whether she would marry Philip of Palatinate or remain protesting for her own mother, Catherine of Aragon, this would drag in months until one day in 1539, Mary Tudor had the courage to visit her own mother’s grave and prayed to god whether it would be good for her to marry a heretic and give up her own inheritance she would pray seriously in the church.

She would have a dream of Catherine of Aragon, her own mother who was sad about her divorce with her bride and she would tell that she herself feels miserable over her parent’s divorce and did not like her father’s attitude and the man that she falls in love is a good option, her mother would smile and comfort her daughter in her dream.

A realization would come up to her and it would be that her mother would be happy if she is happy and that she should marry Philip.

She felt that her happiness is important and her mother would be happy for her to be happy and on the latter part of 1539, she would sign a document to her father in order to renounce her own succession to her father’s throne so that she would marry her love, Philip of Palatinate, this passionate love would lead her to Bavaria and marry Philip of Palatinate on January of 1540 in England before their departure, it was found out that she is pregnant on 1540 and gave birth to a daughter named Catherine of Palatinate on November 10, 1540, months after her own arrival in Bavaria, the daughter is named after her own mother, Catherine of Aragon, this would be followed by another daughter named Elizabeth of Palatinate on May 10, 1543, named after her grandmother, Isabella the Catholic, which would not be followed by another child and she would be widowed on 1548 when her first husband died.

The life and downfall of Anne of Cleves

On the end of 1540, Philip’s cousin, Anne of Cleves was divorced by Henry VIII, she would think about marrying again and by 1544, when Mary of Guise would be recuperating from the birth of her own daughter, Mary of Scotland she herself would die due to consumption due to her weakness after her birth, she would not survive the year after the birth of Mary.

Anne of Cleves felt insulted about the treatment of her by Henry VIII and she would not care what would happen to her in the court of Henry VIII and she is happy that she has never been executed or killed like one of the previous wives of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn.

Anne of Cleves would change her mind about not remarrying and a year after the death of Mary of Guise, , Anne of Cleves would leave England and marry James V, King of Scotland in order to guarantee peace between her former husband and his own nephew who would be her own new husband and she would be the mother of the future King James VI of Scotland on May 10, 1546 who would be her only surviving child aside from her two miscarriages in 1545 and 1547, she would decrease the value of Mary of Scotland in the matrimonial market, Mary of Scotland and James, duke of Rothesay would be the ones who would be tied in the marriage market, both Mary of Scotland and Catherine of Palatinate would be good bride, the proximity of Catherine of Palatinate to the English throne would increase the prestige of Catherine of Palatinate, Catherine of Palatinate would be the bride who would be the one wanted by the French and the Spanish especially after the death of Maria Manuela of Portugal on mid 1540’s and after the death of Margaret of France, the second wife of Philip II on 1554, Mary of Scotland would marry Philip II, the marriage would increase the ties of Scotland and Spain, Mary of Scotland would bring in the relics of Saint Margaret of Scotland to Spain.

Maria of Spain, the sister of the Philip, the Prince of Asturias would be given the inheritance of the Duchy of the Netherlands and Burgundy passing the inheritance of Netherlands and Burgundy to the Austrians.

Yes....she can but the marriage of her two daughters can change that...

English succession
English succession

On 1555, Edward VI would die and his sister, Mary had died already on 1553 and the daughter of Mary, Catherine of Palatinate would be betrothed and shipped to the future King of France instead of the Princess of Scotland, Elizabeth of Palatinate would be betrothed off to Charles Emmanuel of Savoy, the two marriages would be troubling to England and Edward VI would choose Jane Grey as his own heir on 1555 and on this time, Catherine of Palatinate is in France and married off to the Dauphin, Catherine of Palatinate would demand her father in law to reconquer England, however that would only result in the conquest of the Pale of Calais to France on 1556, the marriage between Catherine of Palatinate and the Dauphin would be the one that is good as the French would not consider a marriage between Isabel of Spain or Mary of Scotland and the Dauphin, Isabel of Spain would marry John Manuel of Portugal after the death of her aunt and her cousin on 1554 due to her cousin being stillborn and her aunt dying due to the complications of pregnancy.

Before the marriage of Catherine of Palatinate and the Dauphin, Lady Mary and Catherine of Medicis have finalized the marriage negotiations between Catherine of Palatinate and the Dauphin, it was said that Lady Mary was fond of Catherine of Medicis and she wanted her own daughter, Catherine of Palatinate married to the Dauphin, she thought of a match between her eldest daughter and the future King of Scotland but that would be less prestigious for her own daughter and she would want her own daughter to be the Queen of France which is one of her Father’s titles, she would leave the custody of her younger daughter, Elizabeth to Charles V who would guarantee a marriage of Elizabeth and Charles Emmanuel of Savoy, Catherine of Palatinate would not have her own dowry due to her father’s squandering and full of debts, however her possible succession to England would make her an eligible bride.

The young Catherine of Palatinate would grow up to be a woman in the french court something that Edward VI and Charles V would worry about but since Margaret of France is married off to the Prince of Asturias that would clear the issue between France and Spain.

Passing to spain? It sounds like Spain already has these lands. Did you mean from? To whom?

A New Portuguese Colony
A New Portuguese Colony

On the mid 1500’s the relations between the Bruneians and the Northern Lords such as that of Caboloan that they have Islamized in Selurong in the North would be destroyed after the death of Dayang Panginoan.

The Portuguese would go to the North in the Mid 16th century and the lords in the North of Selurong would ally with Portugal and the Portuguese would conquer Bigan and Tondo in exchange of alliance with the lords of Saludong with the Portuguese against the Bruneians and the and the towns of Saludong in the North which are Faru, Makabebe, Bigan and Olongapo would be given to the Portuguese for trading and as factories for Portugal, this would turn the Northern half of the Island of Selurong or Luzon into a Portuguese colony named Zambales or Portuguese Celudaõ which would be a part of the Portuguese Empire along with the other colonies of Portugal like the lesser Sunda islands and Portuguese Malacca.

The spanish would be offered Margaret, Duchess of Berry and Philip, Prince of Asturias this was a match that they agreed upon and on the death of Margaret, Duchess of Berry, Mary of Scotland would be the third wife of Philip, Prince of Asturias, the birth of a son with Mary of Scotland would make Isabel of Spain the second wife of John IV of Portugal who was once married to Joanna of Spain on 1562, he had already finished his mourning with Joanna of Spain with her son, the other daughter of Margaret of France with Philip II would be betrothed to James VI, duke of Rothesay, this would establish the alliance between Scotland and Spain this was to prepare for a possible succession of Catherine of Palatinate, Queen of France in England, while the marriage of Margaret Eugenia and Ferdinand of Austria would confirm the transfer of the Netherlands and the Burgundian inheritance to the Austrians.

France would engineer a betrothal between Henry, the heir of Navarre and Elizabeth of France despite the two being 7 years apart in age, apparently the Valois would feel that retaining the succession of Brittany in the Valois would be important and the marriage of the eldest daughter of the King would mean that Navarre if they would ascend the throne on a possible death of the Valois-Angouleme without heirs would have the succession of Brittany.

The road to Queendom
The road to Queendom

With her marriage agreement in place, eight-year-old Catherine of Palatinate was sent to France to spend her future at the French court with her groom as negotiated by Mary Tudor and Catherine of Medici.

Catherine of Palatinate was accompanied by her own governess which are german from the court of her mother and father.

Vivacious, beautiful, and clever (according to contemporary accounts), Catherine of Palatinate had a promising childhood. At the French court, she was a favourite with everyone, including Henry II's wife Catherine de' Medici. Catherine of Palatinate learned to play lute and virginals, was competent in prose, poetry, horsemanship, falconry and needlework, and was taught French, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and Greek, in addition to speaking her native German and English. Her future sister-in-law, Elisabeth of Valois, became a close friend of whom Mary "retained nostalgic memories in later life.

On 4 April 1558, she married the Dauphin at Notre Dame de Paris, When Henry II died on 10 July 1559 from injuries sustained in a joust, fifteen-year-old Francis and eighteen-year-old Catherine of Palatinate became king and queen of France.

Two things about this TL: Spain would never offer Infanta Isabella, when she is heiress presuntive of her father’s, to France and will consider only relatives from Austria or Portugal for her (while France will be totally in favour of such match) and if Mary signed a renounce to her rights on the English crown Henry VIII’s testament will name as heirs Edward, then Elizabeth and then Frances Grey and her daughters and Margaret Clifford)

Ninja'd I just made Mary's daughter a slight annoyance for the claims to England, I have plans for her.
