A Palin what if.

It's only 'punishible' in 26 states (which is most).

Frankly I don't see what the modern purpose is in having the electors cast a vote at all.

At this point, it's a ceremony. Functionally your don't need the electors, just the votes. You could just have the state's Governor send the state's votes to the Clerk of the House. But replacing them would require an amendment and open up a constitutional can of worms.

The right bat from the wrong planet

Is it just me, or is the idea of a "radical left wing activist" shooting McCain even more ASB than the GOP lining up behind Palin like stuffed moose...
Do you even have those wild creatures alive "in the wild" in the USA currently?

McCain / Republicans were toast because the economy went down the drain right before the election. Bush had been in office for 8 years so right or wrong the President gets the blame for such. McCain being in the same party as Bush results in the blame for the economy getting shifted to him.

My own view point is the President is cheerleader in chief for the economy, their effects is over rated at best but they are to talk it up.

You want a Republican win in 2008 you need to change the debate from the economy to something else.

Something happens in foreign policy terms, an attack on US, war in middle east, etc.

A scandal on Democrats side, etc.

Something to get voters and media to focus on something other than the economy in November.

That is an interesting point, and a good angle.

The only way Republicans win in 2008 is if Edwards somehow claims the nomination and his affair, and subsequent child, leak around the same time they did in real life. It would have sent the party into a tailspin and even if they replaced him at the convention, which surely they would try to do, it would come off so poorly that I don't know if the party is ever able to recover.

It's just not likely the Republicans win. Even if McCain dies. '08 was an election similar to '84 in the sense that no matter what the opposing party did, they weren't going to win that election.
