I've always wondered what would have happened if Hindenburg had suffered a fatal stroke or something similar in 1932 after the July elections.
Situation:
The Nazi party just won the elections in an almost landslide victory. Doubling their votes from the previous election, they now hold 230 seats in the Reichtstag, more than any other party. Nevertheless, Hitler had justlost the run for presidency to Hindenburg in march.
1. Who would legally follow Hindenburg? The Reichstagspräsident? That would have been Göring...could have been interesting.
2. If there are new elections, who would have won? Hindenburg seemed to be the only one who could beat Hitler by rallying every other party behind him. With him gone, would Hitler have become President? How would that have changed the era of early Nazism?
