For example, if we go all with a cash agriculture, during a downturn people will flood the cities.

However, if we encourage and make it easy for people to have family gardens, citizens can much better absorb downturns from either crop failures or the vagaries of low market prices.

And the U.S. did something similar by promoting “victory gardens” during WWII.

Not that developing nations necessarily need to copy us. In fact, we might well learn from their different ways of doing things.
