A New Dynasty Takes Over Qing Dynasty China?

Hello here.

I am attempting to put a story together on an alternate 1877.

One area I seem to be working/stuck on is what to do with China.

In the 1800's, The Qing dynasty does weaken due to, among some of the issues, an antiquated bureaucracy and outside imperialist interference, but what if China won the Opium wars?

Better yet what if the Qing dynasty did fail but the Opium wars somehow led to a new dynasty to take control, win the wars, and then take dominance. Not to mention its a Han Chinese dynasty? Is this even plausible?

I have a feeling I'm going out on a limb here but everyone's thoughts and help would a invaluable as the whole issue is a little undefined for me.

Thank you!

Dynastic succession was getting a bit screwy in later Ch'ing China, so there's some possibility there on purely paternity grounds

Usually, tho, dynastic succession in China is related to an armed conquest or revolt removing the entire governing dynasty - maybe you could get something like this over the Taiping era, not with Hong Xiquan I mean, but with a systematic state failure leading to a take over by charismatic general or something

Best Regards
Grey Wolf

Along the lines of Grey Wolf's post, in OTL following the suppression of the Taiping and Nian rebellions in the 1860's many wanted/expected Zeng Guofan, the Han Chinese general who led the Qing forces to march on Beijing and replace the Qing Dynasty. Yet to everyone's surprise Zeng remained staunchly loyal to the Qing.

Perhaps in TTL he's a bit more opportunistic and takes his army to establish a new Han Chinese Dynasty?

After a nearly forty year long Warring States Period, with a foreign invasion thrown in just for kicks, a new dynasty (of a sorts) did rise to power. The People's Dynasty! :D

Wow thank you!

I was certainly thinking of something along the lines of the Taiping rebellion. I figured there would be enough stress the old dynasty that it would dissolve earlier then it did. This would somehow lead to a void in power. I did have an idea that somehow there was a third Opium war which instead of weakening the Chinese resolve strengthened it. With the Qing dynasty dying a strong and powerful general would rise taking the reins of power and lead the country to victory against foreign intervention. Thus a new dynasty would be introduced. My goal in this is by the year 1877 there is a very strong China policing the territory around it but also keeping imperialist powers at bay. In the process China begins to reach outward battling for the Spanish owned Philippines, and in a hopefully more interesting turn of events is eyeing Japan of which at this point in my story has actually been weakened a great deal from the Boshin war and has not been able to regain control since.

That is a good observation. PRC has become a dynasty of its own certainly. :)

I think china will have a northward expansion, not a southern one.

the result will be the philippines will be a puppet state like they did with silla.

Considering the past history of China, we can always have the Chrysanthemum Dynasty take over :D (although this would deviate from the OP's condition that the dynasty be Han Chinese).

Which begs the question: Would Japan take over China in this case, or will China end up dominating Japan in this dynasty?

That idea sounds much more plausible. That would help to cause some tension between China and Spain, though I may have to rework the story a little. Also it could cause great problems with Russia. I have no idea where I want Russia to stand, not to mention America.

That is a good question. I was thinking something more along the lines of a weakened Japan that is threatened by China. The Meji restoration isn't as powerful and the Ezo republic continues to exist. China supports Ezo while other imperialist European nations support the restoration government. Its Europe's way of attempting to re-dominate or marginalize China.

My only issue is in this story France has a somewhat warm relationship with China. This is why I needed help determining China in the first place.
