Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to create a scenario where Country A can, with all seriousness and plausibility, attempt to coerce Country B by threatening to extend diplomatic recognition to Country B.

The least ASB's possible, please. Go!

Alright. Country B has a large and unfriendly neighbor, country C. Country C has said in the past that if any country (Country B is unrecognized by all countries) recognizes Country B, Country C will invade and occupy Country B (think Somalia and Somaliland, except Somalia is very large and very powerful). Country A, therefore, threatens to recognize Country B.

Makes me think of Taiwan, for some reason.

That's what I thought of too when I read Ganesha's reply - except that a couple dozen countries still recognize Taiwan as the legitimate government of China, and the PRC hasn't done a thing about them except withdraw diplomatic relations and foreign aid. I don't know what they'd do if someone recognized Taiwan as an independent country, though.

I could think of a plausible scenario, although 'recognize' carries a slightly different connotation than we'd really be looking for. Suppose the world is ordered in a way similar to Europe's hegemonic view of the world prior to, say, the 19th century. A country is really only a country if it meets certain criteria, but if recognized, "enjoys" a place in the world order that, in reality, would force its hand to acquiesce to the "greater world's" power. I can't think of specific examples, as this has obviously never happened before, but perhaps it could involve something like the World Bank, or the United Nations, or even further back, recognition by the Pope.
