A More Successful Iran-Iraq War

In 1980, Iraq launched an attack at its neighbor, Iran. Within two years, however, the Iranians had already regained their territory, and were on the offensive.

My question is this: what if Iraq had some massive stroke of luck? How much could they have gained from this?

I think with Iraq & Iran, analogies can be made with Nazi Germany & Soviet Russia!
Both are virtual dictatorships - with they own secret police.

Could Iraq took the wrong strategy went east too soon, taking the German strategy should have taken Kuwait first - if international opinion would have let them, then with a bigger power base attack Iran.

Main difference though with the German/Russia analogue, Iraq had no where near the military advantage that the Germans had over Russia.
