Hello, fellow AH members. The following is a timeline with a POD in the early 1800s. If the timeline gets popular enough, I hope to continue it up to the present day. So without further ado, here it is:
A More Perfect Union A world so familiar, yet so different
The United States presidential election of 1816 proved to be one for the ages. With the Federalist Party on the brink of collapse, most Americans though the election would be easily handed to James Monroe, the Democratic-Republican candidate from Virginia. But in the late autumn and early winter of 1816, the tide turned towards the Federalists as incumbent President James Madison turned on his own party to adopt Federalist policies like a national bank and protective tariffs. This was a major blow to the Monroe campaign, but a major victory at the same time for Rufus King, who campaigned for the preservation of these policies. In the end, Rufus King was elected the 5th President of the United States with 160 electoral votes as opposed to James Monroe's 57 electoral votes. The years to come for America would be both bright and turbulent.
