Good points all.

Perhaps then, Kennedy could at first be Secretary of State, and then VP for FDR's last term?Right, 1940 would have been a bad idea, but if you look again at HARRY's suggestion, he put Kennedy in the '44 election. By then he could've put Eleanor in the race and no one would've batted an eye.
The only reason I can think of specifically that he might have wanted Kennedy is to reinforce the Europe First strategy, which is perhaps a little redundant, but there are worse models of veep selection IOTL.
Perhaps, although that sort of thing certainly didn't keep JFK out of troubleAs for Chappaquiddick, I believe Ted was on the island in a meeting with former RFK campaign advisers, which directly relates to the POD. Easily butterflied. And as for his social life in general, it could easily be perceived as a healthy part of the Kennedy legacy.![]()
Beyond being Ted Kennedy, the nation would have the potential for a three-man race in 1976, especially if civil rights still come into play on schedule. Without Nixon and the Southern Strategy, butterflies might allow Wallace (George this time) to make his best showing, possibly complicating the outcome. Nonetheless, Ted Kennedy could possibly win in this TL 1976, but it may still be a close race, particularly if the last GOP administration ITTL was Eisenhower. From the looks of things on wikipedia, '76 was indeed pretty close. But if Ted's running on a strengthened legacy in an otherwise similar political climate, he probably does better. Still, this OTL election map is so odd I can't imagine it looking in any way similar ITTL.
