I realize there is a thread exactly like this already, but it's an interesting question. The Old South was largely just black and white (and to a slight extent, Indian), with little cultural variation within these groups (except natives). I know there are some unique ethnic groups in the South (Gullah in the Lowcountry, Cajuns, Creoles, and numerous others in southern Louisiana, Chinese in the Mississippi Delta region, Vietnamese fishermen in Biloxi and Bayou la Batre), but these are only in pockets. What could be some possible groups that would make the Deep South one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world? More variation in white and black groups, a stronger Native American influence, and a heavy presence of Asians, Latins, Middle Easterners, and Pacific Islanders are what I'm looking for.
