Tip O'Neil: The President showed his true colors today. He's the biggest liar since Nixon. He hid important information from the American people.

Jesse Helms: Reagan betrayed the conservative cause that put him in the White House, but today conservatism has a real champion in me.

The American People: They gave Reagan an approval rating of 23%.

Gary Hart: What happened today shows why we need young and fresh leadership in the White House.

Reverend Jesse Jackson: God will judge Reagan just as he judged the poor and African Americans in this country.

Walter Mondale: If he hid this from us what else is he hiding.

Bob Dole:The American people need a truth teller and that's going to be me.

    Vice-President Bush:Crickets

Secretary Jeanne Kirkpatrick: The hostility towards the President is strengthening the Soviet's and it must stop.

    Iowa Results Aftermath

Gary Hart had risen from a little known senator to a serious contender for the nomination. In his speech he said "Iowa has shown that we can win and that our message has resonated with Democrats." Bush was happy as he had lost Iowa but not as badly as he expected. Dole barely won against the VP of an unpopular president. Helms got a dismal 15% he awaited South Carolina in order to get momentum.

Moderator:Hello and Welcome to the First Democratic Debate. The first question is wheather or not Ronald Regan should be legally prosecuted for lying to the American public about his illness.
Tip O'Neil:I think he should because he told the American people that after the shooting that he was perfectly fine but as we know he wasn't. When you are president you must hold your self to a higher moral standard and that includes not lying to the American people.
Hart:Yes, he should be investigated for his actions. But, what happened here shows why we need fresh new leadership in the White House as the current administration thinks its above telling the truth.
Mondale:president Reagan lied to the American people but we shouldn't let it distract us from the issues.
Jackson:Ronald Reagan attacked the moral character of the poor in this country when he was the one without character.(Loud Applause).

The rest of the debate was Hart discussing how his new ideas are needed to move the country forward. Mondale talked abóut his time as Hubert Humphrey's protégé. Tip O'Neil was brutally honest in his attacks on Reagan and his policies.

    The Republican Debate
Moderator:Should Reagan be punished for lying to the American people?
Helms:Of course he should he lied to the American public and embarrassed us in the eyes of the Soviet's. That's why we need to elect me a true conservative so I can make them respect us once again.
Dole: Reagan did lie but I don't think he should be punished he is healthy now and decided to not seek another term for the good of the country.
Bush:Of course not because I've served closely with the President and I can assure you that he is healthy enough to serve out the rest of this term.

Hart and Helms won both of the debates and it shows in their new poll numbers. Hart now leads by 20 points in New Hampshire and Helms is ahead of Bush in South Carolina.
