A Máquina do Mundo

But not out of the ordinary for the period - Caracas in Venezuela was originally Santiago de León de Caracas, after all.

True. Both names would probably be valid - though for purposes of the timeline I will tend to favor the shorter name. (As an aside, I suspect that Terra Nova do Bacalhau will at some point in the future be shorted de facto to just "Bacalhau" or maybe "Bacalao" in Portuguese lexicon).

Ah, the old 'St. name of x.' format. Can't really go wrong with that when it comes to Iberian settlements.
Still, 'St. John of Cod' is quite a funny name.
São João da Terra Nova do Bacalhau is a bit of a mouthful.

The shortening of the name that may occur in a few generations will be dictated by easiness of pronunciation into something like one of these options
São João
São João da Terra Nova
Terra Nova do Bacalhau
Bacalhau

São João dos Bancos, or São João dos Grandes Bancos sounds better IMHO.

Oh, sub'd

(Im still waiting the Angola wank :p)

Or Santa Maria de Belém do Grão-Pará, now better known as Belém do Pará or simply Belém.

Intresting TL Reagent. I will follow this.

São João
São João da Terra Nova
Terra Nova do Bacalhau
Bacalhau

Thanks for the feedback. I made some slight modifications to the update to reflect the naming situation.

Will you restart your Angola-TL anytime soon?

There are two more updates for this timeline that I want to finish first - but after that I will update the Modern era Portuguese Africa timeline.

I have 11 updates typed up, but I need some time to work on accompanying graphics and edit. I've also been working on another project I think many readers of this timeline will enjoy.

*for the Portuguese and Portuguese Diaspora on the board, yes, that was intentional.

Glad to hear it. I may not be Portuguese but I sure as hell enjoy me Portugal-centric timelines.

Oh I see what you did there.:p:cool::p:cool:

Pretty cool to have the comeback on Portugal's national day (given that it is a Portugal TL after all:D)

Unfortunately, the relaunch will be a bit later than anticipated (probably this weekend). I've been working a lot on the successor timeline to Angola Avante! / A África que o Português Criou, so the good news is that is close to being ready (if A Máquina do Mundo isn't ready yet).

Sorry for the delay. Though, Happy Portugal Day everyone!
