But not out of the ordinary for the period - Caracas in Venezuela was originally Santiago de León de Caracas, after all.

The shortening of the name that may occur in a few generations will be dictated by easiness of pronunciation into something like one of these optionsTrue. Both names would probably be valid - though for purposes of the timeline I will tend to favor the shorter name. (As an aside, I suspect that Terra Nova do Bacalhau will at some point in the future be shorted de facto to just "Bacalhau" or maybe "Bacalao" in Portuguese lexicon).

Or Santa Maria de Belém do Grão-Pará, now better known as Belém do Pará or simply Belém.
