A "lost" US state?

Despite it's name, North Carolina has always had far, far more in common with Virginia than it does with South Carolina.
 
Pittsylvania, Westsylvania or Vandalia were proposed names in the 1760's and early 1770's for the lands later taken by parts of West Virginia, western Pennsylvania (including Pittsburg area) and possibly parts of Ohio.

this was more killed by the competing state claims which demanding expansion "to the pacific" based on old charters.

Also, at one point, breaking up Texas into three to five territories was considered.

North and South California.

This does not make mention of potential acquisitions in Canada (Quebec or northern Oregon territory) and Mexico (mexican war).
