A Little Problem with "Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror"

In a studio somewhere in Hamburg, William Joyce looked over the paper given him by the man from the Abwehr and smiled. The might of his adopted land and Leader was so great that they could openly confront the Jews and their despised puppets. They must be punished, and how better than to proclaim their humiliation over the airwaves?

The light went on and he began to speak:

“Jairmany calling, Jairmany calling! People of Britain, greetings from the Third Reich. This is the voice you have learned to fear. This is the Voice of Terror. Again, we bring you disaster: crushing, humiliating disaster. It is folly to stand against the mighty wrath of the Führer. Do you need more testimony of his invincible might to bring you to your knees? Very well. Are you ready, V-Mann FRITZCHEN? This is the Voice of Terror. A secret airplane factory somewhere in England. Listen. Screams of the dying can still be heard.”

In his flat in London, Eddie Chapman (sometimes known as FRITZCHEN, or as ZIGZAG) threw a fag-end into the fire. “Bloody hell!” he said in disgust. “Silly sod could get a bloke killed, setting him up like that!” His MI-5 minder was inclined to agree.

In a posh Belgravia manse, Sefton Delmer turned down the wireless and addressed the staff of the wireless deception group: “That’s the sort of thing we want Der Chef to be saying. Who has a suggestion?”

In a worn office in Westminster, J. C. Masterman, who oversaw such matters as Der Chef and ZIGZAG, let out a sigh of relief. “Ah. Still no agents we haven’t turned.”

And in Hollywood, the staff of Universal Pictures wondered why their new Sherlock Holmes movie just didn’t seem to be working out.
