A 'Liberia' In North America.

Liberia was formed in the 1820s by freed American slaves, would it ever have been possible to have a state or province or a separate nation in North America for freed or escaped slaves during the 18th or 19th centuries?

It's not impossible, though part of the appeal of Liberia for its founders and early settlers was going 'back to Africa', i.e. reclaiming the slave's homeland (and bringing 'civilization' to the 'uncivilized' people of Africa)

I think before Liberia was founded there were some half-hearted attempts to have freed American slaves settle on Hispaniola (both in Haiti and in parts of the Dominican Republic - the Samana peninsula I think)

The OP had me thinking about how the Americo-Liberians had picked up some cultural traits from their southern masters that contributed to the huge mess in Liberia-specifically, the concentration of power in a small neo-aristocratic elite, discrimination based on skin color (the Americo-Liberians were prejudiced against the darker skinned native Liberians), the measurement of wealth in plantation size and number of slaves owned, etc.

Then it hit me. Liberia is the answer to the commonly asked question "What would the CSA look like if it had survived".

What a chilling irony...
